Over 15,000acres were claimed by the expanding St-Etienne conurbation between 1950 and 1977. A careful observation of the ultimate use of this land has led to a changing of the curve showing the regular doubling of surfaces into a new one made of a succession of phases. Thus a phase of rapid growth is followed by a stage of stagnation allowing for the preparing of a next phase of expansion. We have reached such a stage since 1973.
