Industrial location and industrial development in the aire métropolitaine marseillaise

The aim of the paper is to examine the changing spatial pattern of manufacturing industry in the Aire Métropolitaine Marseillaise. The Fos Development Scheme has promoted a westward shift of the industrial centre of gravity, and the structure of both manufacturing and the firm has been severely modified. In order to understand these events, in depth interviews were arranged with various manufacturing firms. The behavioural aspects of industrial location (e.g. the decision-making process and the organizational structure of the firm) are given special emphasis and the resultant patterns of manufacturing industry in the region are discussed.
