The fall of fertility in France arouses some anxiety. The sixth colloquium of demography for which most French demographers gathered in Lille in April 1979 was devoted to this question. Economists gave several explanations. Some consider children as a durable consumer good (School of Chicago) and apply the simplified psychology of homo economicus. Others are interested in a global balance between generations and in their competition on the labour market (Grauman and Easterlin). The consequences of low fertility gave rise to rather heated discussions about population aging, some dangers of which may be overestimated. However the search for causes and consequences remains rather theoretical as most demographers still think that population policies cannot exert much influence on fertility and that such policies would give too much importance to government power.
