The marine ostracod record from the Lateglacial period in Britain and NW Europe: a review in Studies in the Lateglacial of North-West Europe.

For over a century ostracods have been mentioned in accounts of glacial and Lateglacial successions. The history of such ideas and the assumptions behind them are reviewed and summarised. At best, the ostracod record for the Lateglacial offers a climatostratigraphy recording climatic amelioration from the Late Devensian to the Flandrian, with a brief reversal corresponding to the Loch Lomond Stadial. Such complete sequences are rare onshore, but available offshore near the west coast of Scotland. There are still problems when correlation is attempted from west to east coast sequences in Scotland, and correlation is sought with the published North Sea records. Such problems require fuller, more detailed study of continuous cores for ostracod data and the support of absolute age determinations. Ostracod faunal studies in Scandinavia need to be undertaken to provide the information on which to base comparisons for north-west Europe.
