This article describes the current trend in the energy situation in Belgium and its dependence on imports. Against this background it discusses the difficulties encountered in working deposits of coal at very great depth, leading to the search for a manless method of extracting deep deposits. The article goes on to describe the techniques of underground gasification and their potential adaptation to deep deposits| it also sketches the preliminary studies and assesses the economics of the method. Finally, the plan for the first Belgo-German trials is indicated. (LW).
