The paper gives a survey of present day structure and current development tendencies of the town system of the F.R.G. A short outline of the historical development is followed by an analysis of the distribution of location and size, the economic structure, and the functions of the towns in 1970. Finally, some current development tendencies of the town system and consequences for spatial planning are outlined, against the background of structural conditions which have fundamentally changed since the sixties.
