In the past years a detailed investigation of the town-environment-connections was practised in GDR, which however left open some fundamental questions, especially the explanation of the relations between the town-environment-region and other area-categories as well as the importance of the town-environment-region with reference to the process of socialist reproduction. The first part of the paper deals with these questions and in the second part the author demonstrates his conception of the gradual investigation of the town-environment-region by means of the town-environment-region of Berlin, capital of GDR. Hereby starting-points of research are demarcation, classification and characterization of the town-environment connection area of Berlin. Based on the transport-facilities of the communities in the Berlin environment three zones are ascertained.
