The Sahelian ecosystem is very fragile, and any exploitation must be planned with great care. Misuse can lead not only to reduced productivity, but also to increased desertification that would threaten all human habitation within this zone. It is almost commonplace that the best agricultural prospects of semi-arid environments such as the Sahel zone lie in multiple land-use, a view that has been expounded so many times before that one questions the value of further international conferences on the subject.
