The analysis of statistical data derived from the processing of abortion bulletins collected in France in 1976 leads to the conclusion that, in spite of some undercoverage, these data are reliable enough to permit the description of the phenomenon, through various rates according to age, duration of marriage and lenght of interval since last birth. Unmarried women abort relatively more often than married women. The frequency of abortion increases with parity up to third birth but hardly varies thereafter, if the effect of sterility is duly eliminated. Contrary to what one would expect, abortion rates decrease when duration of marriage increases but it is impossible to specifity whether this is cohort effect or if it is the consequence of a more efficient contraception at older durations. 135.000 abortions have been enregistered in 1976. An evanuation of the undercoverage is proposed which leads to estimate the total number of abortions at approximately 250.000.
