Le célibat paysan en 1975

Auteur :
JEGOUZO, G.

Description :
Since the 1950s, both agricultural workers and farmers appear to have experienced considerable difficulty in finding wives. Has this situation changed recently? This is the question considered in this paper, which compares the results of the population censuses of 1968 and 1975, both for France as a whole and for individual regions. In the working population aged 40 and over, the number of never-married persons increased again, though only slightly, among the agricultural population. The reverse is true of the population aged under 40. This does not necessarily mean that the economic position of the younger generations in the agricultural population has changed, since the chances of marriage are still lower than those among industrial workers. Moreover the imbalance between the sexes in the agricultural population was reduced mainly by an increase in the migration of men out of agriculture, rather than by a reduction in the out-migration of women, in spite of attempts to persuade the population to return to the land.
