General maps showing the natural conditions of location in the GDR are being drawn up according to a consistent method, to assist socialist intensification in agriculture. On the medium-scale maps of agricultural land units, heterogeneous units with a simple structure of the soil cover (elementary pedochorographic features) are distinguished, which are characterised in a complex way according to natural-regional features (land form societies, relief, type of consistent arrangement of soils). Location units are disposed in three levels: (1) regional type of land unit, (2) type of land unit, (3) groupe of land units. Evaluation for practical application is based on the essential production-defining features of the mapping units. Principal concern is with evaluation for central planning of plant production and amelioration and the preparation of amelioration work.
