Environnement physiographique, géologique et biologique des pavements profonds de nodules polymétalliques

Description :
The formation and the distribution of the main polymetallic nodule pavements are controlled by several interrelated factors. Nine fields, from three provinces (North Pacific, South West Pacific, Circum Antarctica) are described to show the role of the physiographic environment. The most common geological basis is the lower part of a volcanic slope made of debris where the whole transition from initial debris to the true nodule can be observed. High density fields, often located at the border of high organic productivity superficial zones also evolute under the influence of benthic fauna activity (both burrowers and sediment grazers).
