Spatial dimensions of inventiveness in New Zealand: the role of individuals and institutions

Studies of inventive activity, based largely on analyses of 19th century U.S. patent statistics, have emphasised the urban concentration of inventiveness, suggesting it as the cause of urban growth. It has been assumed that the relationship between urbanisation and inventiveness weakened after the first decade of the present century owing to the growth of institution based research activity. The analyses presented in the paper test this assumption using patent application data for New Zeland for 1970 and 1971, and find it to be untennable.
