Migrant workers, circular migration and development

Auteur :
VAN-AMERFOORT J. M. M.,

Description :
In discussions about migrant workers in Western Europe, these migrants are generally supposed to form a homogeneous category. This is a very European-centered vision. The migrants from the Riff (Morocco), for instance, do not correspond to the general ideas about migrant workers. Labour-migration from the Riff corresponds much more closely to the concept of circular migration as it is used, for example, in Southeastern Africa. The consequences of this migration pattern for the Riff area are analysed. The author concludes that the standard of living has been raised, but the basic problems remain unsolved (unemployment, bad demographic situation). (AGD).
