Der Einzelhandel in Alt-Venedig Le commerce de détail dans le vieux Venise

Auteur :
DOPP W.,

Description :
This study stresses the increasing importance of foothpaths within the traffic system of the old part of the city of Venice. The net-work of foothpaths, originally subordinated to the system of canals has been developed autonomously since the beginning of the industrial and railway age. A number of topographical and economic factors is given which are responsible for the retardation of the development of large scale retail enterprise within the island part. On the basis of the old town districts the structure of retail business is described in detail: A classification by rank, lines of business and size is given, and attention is drawn to the special position of the sestier San Marco. From the pattern of location of individual business a delimination of a CBD and several secondary business centres is derived. (l'A).
