This study deals with the shutdown of the last four sulphur mines in the Romagna and in the Marches between 1957/64 and the subsequent emigration. Since the establishment of new industries was little succesfull, the decrease of population in numerous small villages in the mining area amounted to 70-80%. The remaining in-habitants are mostly pensionists. Chief aim of the author was to study the migratory fields of the miners which differ clearly from those of subsistence farmers, mezzadri, and shepherds in the area. Typical places of destination within the miners'unusually large migratory fields are the industrial sites of the Montecatini Concern in the Sicilian sulphur-mining area, in the Tuscan ironmining area, at Ferrara, and in the north-west Italian industrial towns.
