Effects on mill location, size and input characteristics on the economic efficiency of Kenya's forest industries

The actual rate of develoment of Kenya's forest industries is considerably lower than the potential rate, owing to constraints such as high transportation costs, quality deficiencies, and non-competitive prices. We suggest that these constraints index underlying problems of location, scale, and input characteristics of wood product mills. The multivariate technique of canonical correlation is used to unravel complex relationships between the efficiency of mills and their locational, scalar, and related attributes. Four distinctive patterns of relationship are revealed. The implications of thease relationships are analysed with respect to the present locational and other geographic aspects of forest industries as well as future prospects of development. (AGD).
