Description :
For a long time, the iron carapaces of the Mouydir have been supposed to be climatic carapaces, caused by pedogenesis. Actually, we have to deal with carapaces due to chemical weathering of a special geological substratum the Hoggar. All alluvial blankets which are deposited on rocks containing sulphur are cemented by a plain, iron containing matrix. So these deposits cannot any more be regarded as evidence of a tropical pedogenesis in the north of the Hoggar.
