Croûtes calcaires quaternaires de période froide en France méditerranéenne

Auteur :
VOGT T.,

Description :
Quaternary calcareous crusts of a cold period in Mediterranean France, with specific characteristics are represented. With a thin section, we may observe: a. weakly developed organic material which alternates with inserted alluvium| b.a fringe of calcite crystalls rooted in the decalcified cortex| c. the mobilisation of iron and its precipitation in the shape of hydroxides. The same features are characteristic for areas of present day permafrost especially for valley lowlands with coarse glacial drift. Laboratory experiments are able to explain b and c by phenomena dependent on cryo-osmose. These calcareous crusts testify conditions of development which are similar to those in the present day tundra.
