Sketches of urban and cultural life in North America.

Auteurs :
RATZEL, F.
STEHLIN, S.

Description :
Translation of Städte- und Culturbilder aus Nordamerika (Leipzig, 1876), written by one of the major European figures in nineteenth-century geography. As an unknown journalist, Rätzel traveled to the USA for a Wanderjahre in 1873-1874. His observations were mainly of cities| lengthy periods were spent in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Richmond, Charleston, Columbia, Savannah, and New Orleans. From there he moved up the Mississippi River to St. Louis. Cincinnati, Chicago, Denver and San Francisco were also on Ratzel's itinerary. Observations on ethnic communities (especially German-American) received generous coverage in this work, as did conditions of black life, gardens and climate. Detailed notes provided by the editor help to put Rätzel's observations into perspective. - (DWG)
