Sugar cane cultivation and rural misery : Northeast Brazil in Festschrift to honor Raymond E. Crist.
Auteur :DEWITT, J.
Description :
Sugar cane is now even more of a monoculture in northeastern Brazil than it was in the early colonial period of Portuguese rule. Since the 1970s, the Brazilian government has subsidized sugar cane cultivation in order to promote the use of alcohol as fuel in vehicles. Food production has declined in the region and exploitation of workers continues. - (DWG)
