Detailed morphological, physical and chemical analysis of a sequence of soil profiles allows to explain an acidification gradient which is rather unusual on limestone and corresponds to a continuum of forest types whose extremes belong to the Carici-Fagetum and the Luzulo-Fagetum. Directly related to superficial deposits of different origin and composition, the differentiation of soil types is clearly correlated with the distribution of socio-ecological groups of herbaceous species. - (AA.).
