Lithology and slope gradient play major roles in explaining the boundary (ca 2 400 m) between a lower belt with well developed soils and mass movement phenomena and an upper belt characterized by solid precipitation and patterned ground. Expansion of grazing reduced forest cover and lowered the boundary of periglacial activity. - (DWG)
