In the USSR, mountainous highlands account for 26 % of the territory and over 20 % of its total population. Central planning is criticized in this paper as having led to serious environmental deterioration, disruption of local cultures and ethnic unrest. A useful overview of past Soviet mountain research is presented and priorities for the future are discussed. - (DWG)
