One group of people who became victims of the Akosombo Dam were the 78 000 inhabitants of the Volta Basin who were evacuated from their traditional homesteads and ancestral lands and resettled in newly created townships on the higher banks of the lake. The attempt to mechanize the settlers' agriculture failed and many settlers were left without a reasonable means of livelihood. - (L'A.).
