The calculation is based on an investigation of the present land use pattern and the resulting extend of arable land available for small holders. Basic social data, such as mean household and holding sizes (4,5 persons, 1,70 ha respectively), but also population figures and natural growth rates, form a second starting point for the calculation of Malawi's population carrying capacity. The population of 6,3 mill. in 1981 will grow with an average growth rate of 3,0 % to 11,8 mill. in the year 2000. Regional differences are apparent : the presently sparsely populated Northern Region will be able to accomodate additional population even in the year 2000, while the already densely populated Southern Region will produce a surplus population of more than 1 mill.
