Atmospheric circulation variations and the rainfall of Sri Lanka

Auteur :
SUPPIAH, R.

Description :
The relationships between the Southern Oscillation Index and the seasonal rainfall of Sri Lanka reveal strong seasonal dependencies. Periodicities in seasonal rainfall in the longterm fluctuations of Sri Lanka are very similar to the dominant periodicities in the Southern Oscillation phenomenon. Variations in the sea surface temperature of the Arabian Sea strongly influence the intensities of the dominant air currents of the Arabian Sea branch of the SW monsoon and hence control the rainfall of the SW monsoon season in Sri Lanka.
