Description :
Ultrasonic monitoring of moisture adsorption and desorption of a quartz micaschist produced results contrary to expectations. Upon water uptake rather than an ultrasonic velocity increase due to the introduction of a better propagating medium there was a velocity decrease. This velocity decrease is interpreted as being a consequence of changes in rock elasticity brought about by a diminution in the bonding strength of the rock. This means that wetting, prior to freezing, may weaken a rock.
