Long-term tendencies of the concentration of population are under study in 11 metropolitan areas. The causes of metropolisation should be linked with the national planning principle of the even development : social aspects rather than economic ones. At the same time, the differences demonstrate the development of coalfields. In contradiction to the relatively important size hierarchisation of metropolitan areas, the qualitative hierarchisation is insignificant, with the exception of Prague metropolitan area. - (MS)
