With the aim of monitoring the variation in soil water deficit in meadows on the basis of satellite imagery a series of ground measurements were carried out. From the results obtained in 1986 it was evident that infrared radiometry was able to quantify both the soil water deficit and the moisture content of the canopy. Shallow soils indicated a larger thermic difference between the surface and the ambient air than deeper profiles. - (Authors).
