An account of the resource

Description
An account of the resource
The low level of income among farming families triggered a lively interest in the subject of the activity and sources of income in farm households. The work described here has sought to determine the main changes in income levels and structures within the population associated with farms in Poland after 1990. Use of the Agricultural Census of 2002 in turn allowed for an illustration of the spatial differentiation to kinds of activity and sources of income wthin the population on private (family-owned) farms, with an attempt also being made to indicate what conditions this differentiation. - (BJ)

Description
An account of the resource
The present study is concerned with the identification of the basic differences between nodality and centrality, as exemplified by Polish cities with populations of 20 000 or more. Besides a statement of the theoretical differences between the above characteristics, an attempt has been made to determine the current functional hierarchy to towns and cities in Poland, as well as to establish basic statistical relationships so that some determinants affecting the level of nodality and centrality might be indicated. - (BJ)

Description
An account of the resource
During downpours, material from the loess cover of Proboszczowicka Plateau is eroded. Since the slopes and bottoms of the valley are forested roots of trees are exposed in erosion cuttings. Following, exposure, anatomical changes and traces of wounds appear in roots. This allows for the dating of root exposure, and thereby of the time at which erosion episodes occur. The results show that the gully network changes very quickly in the face of erosion episodes occuring a few times per decade. - (BJ)

Description
An account of the resource
As part of active conservation measures for the beaver in Poland, 11 animals were transferred to the Rawka Valley in the central part of the country in 1983. Over a period of nearly 20 years, the beavers spread over the entire valley and into those of adjacent rivers, as far as 60-70 km from the reintroduction site. The article shows the successive stages to the colonization process, and the effects of activity by the species such as the digging of burrows, building of lodges, local rising of the water level in the channel and valley floor, and vegetational changes. While a rise in the water level in the valley brought about an increase in the productivity of meadows, people complain about the damage being done to trees. - (BJ)

Network linkages represent one of the main features of the contemporary economy. The article discusses certain the necessary conditions underpinning such network linkages between cities, before going on to characterise selected network systems of cities from the past. There is also a presentation of contemporary theoretical approaches to matters of the functioning of large cities in networks, with attention being paid to the difficulties with measuring the inter-city linkages involved. - (BJ)
