This paper examines the level of soil erosion in South Africa, with special attention to the role of gully erosion (or donga erosion in local language). According to the study donga erosion is a very serious problem in the area, and physico-geographical conditions favour this type of erosion in many parts of the country. The main conclusion of the paper is that severe degradation is mainly due to anthropogenic factors and to mismanagement of the land so that protection against the formation of dongas must be based on proper land management and land use. - (JS)

Veszélyes hulladékok felszini elhelyezése lösszel borított területen (Püspökszilágy)
Dépôt de déchets dangereux sur des surfaces recouvertes de loess (Püspökszilágy)

Geomorphology ; Hungary ; Loess ; Pollution ; Radioactive waste ; Soil erosion
This paper summarizes the results of a complex physical geographical survey in the Püspökszilágy area. This is a nuclear waste disposal site where low and medium activity nuclear waste is disposed, deriving from the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. As part of the study soil profiles were taken and analysed, geomorphological, slope category maps were prepared, and the extent of soil erosion was calculated. As a result future surface modifications and soil cover removal were expressed in tons/hectar and mm/year. - (JS)

Danube ; Delta ; Environmental conservation ; Geology ; Geomorphology ; Hydrology ; Physical geography ; Romania
In this paper the most important geographical aspects of the evolution and development of the Danube Delta (Romania) are discussed, along with its geology, geomorphology, hydrology and land use pattern. Special attention is paid to the environmental conflicts of the area, which arose after the political changes of 1989-90, when the delta became a nature conservation area, and thus subject of environmental protection. As a consequence a massive habitat reconstruction scheme of agricultural fields, forests and fish-ponds was launched. The effects and shortcomings of these measures are discussed. - (JS)

A szélirányonkénti energetikai paraméterek idöbeli és területi eltérése Magyarországon
Différences temporelles et territoriales des paramètres énergétiques des directions du vent en Hongrie
Analyse statistique ; Hongrie ; Pression atmosphérique ; Variation saisonnière ; Variation spatiale ; Vent ; Vitesse du vent
Atmospheric pressure ; Hungary ; Seasonal variation ; Spatial variation ; Statistical analysis ; Wind ; Wind speed
The main aim of this paper is to address whether changes in the surface pressure field over Europe are reflected in the statistical structures and inner definitiveness of wind direction field over Hungary, in spite of the specific pressure field of the country. Author analysed hourly wind direction and wind velocity data recorded at ten meteorological stations in the country between 1968-72 and 1991-95. His main conclusion is that temporal charactéristics of the statistical structure of wind direction field over Hungary depend on the terrain features and vary by season. - (JS)
